I slink into my bathroom, tired from the emotional rollercoaster of a day that I just had. I need to think about this from a logical perspective. Sure, it would be nice if Kerry loved me as much as I loved her, but with the contract looming over our heads, I can’t get myself caught up with the frivolities of love.

What am I going to do after I marry her? After tonight, are we even still getting married?

I change into my comfortable flannel pajamas and lie in bed. Under the safety of my covers, I let my mind wander to a possible future with Kerry.

Maybe this can work. Love was never going to be part of the equation. I’ve already resigned myself to that fact after the disaster that was Hawaii.

Once Kerry and I get married, I can fly out to London to work with clients that I’ve gotten to know pretty well when I backpacked all over Europe. We won’t even have to see each other. We’ll live on completely different continents and stay out of the way of each other’s lives.

Our business will grow, and I’ll have saved the Chambers family fortune from being used inappropriately. And once we reach the 5-year cut-off, we’ll go our separate ways. No-fuss, no muss.

I groan through my pillow.

“If only it were that simple,” I mumble to the space of my bedroom.

As hard as I try to make things all black and white. The fact that it’s Kerry makes things a whole can of worms more complicated. Because as much as I wish I could just turn my feelings off into something akin only to professionalism, I know deep down that I can’t.

And that’s exactly what I’m afraid of.
